If you’re a nine to fiver and can’t get your opshopping ‘fix’
during the working week, your day is just about to get better.
Forget your late night shopping bender at your local mall, on the last Thursday of every month head to Windsor Road Thriftstore, for a special opshopping session in Lydia’s pop-up shop.
The cream of the crop in clothing donations is collated for this monthly affair, and most garments are either high end labels, designer or vintage. Opshop volunteer, Helen, has sold everything from Country Road, Alannah Hill, Sass & Bide and Zara to True Religion, Sheike & Co, Wayne Cooper and Carla Zampatti.
“We had a $375 Review dress here tonight that I know has only been worn once,
and we sold it for $45.”
The price range is a little higher compared to their usual thrift shop price point, with garments going for between $5 – $50, but for those who are time poor or would rather not rummage, this store will satiate your secondhand cravings.
Unlike the usual ‘creative chaos’ you expect at an opshop, Lydia’s is set out like a boutique. Everything is arranged according to category from skirts, trousers and childrens wear, to dresses, jeans and formal attire, making it a user-friendly thrifting experience.
Not to mention the friendly volunteers, who are only too happy to give up their Thursday evenings for the cause.
“All the profits go to people in need across the world. We’ve got about 15 people on our team who wash, iron and tag the garments and help us roll the racks away when it’s over,” Helen said.
Occasionally the store hosts special sales at the end of winter and the end of the year, so be sure to put September and November’s sessions in your diary.
“We do a $5 sale and everything goes for $5…everything! Usually by the end of the night, I’m just giving stuff away,” she said.
Word to the wise, get there early to line up…thrifty fashionistas flock to the store from 4pm to be the first in the doors at 5pm.
